Exosomes for hair loss — an emerging option

Exosomes are one of the newest areas of regenerative hair research. Early findings are interesting, but the evidence is far less established than for PRP. We discuss them honestly, as an option alongside an evidence-based plan.

What it is

Exosomes

Exosomes are tiny vesicles released by cells. They carry proteins, lipids and genetic material (such as microRNA) that act as signals between cells.

Laboratory and animal research suggests exosomes from certain cell types may influence the hair follicle growth cycle.

Exosome products differ widely in their source, processing and content, so one product cannot be assumed to behave like another.

Thrive works with several exosome brands, including Labossen, Dutexome, ExoCoBio ASCE HRLV. The doctor explains the source of each product before treatment.

Labossen Bio-Xome Hair is a two-part signalling kit: a freeze-dried powder combining STEM-in EX exosomes — derived from Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells, with the manufacturer reporting over 20 billion particles and a small, uniform particle size — with its PnP-Stable GF Complex (Hair), a set of growth factors the maker stabilises with an added disulfide bond for longer activity, plus a hyaluronic acid solution for reconstitution.

Who may be suitable

  • Adults with early-to-moderate pattern hair loss who understand the evidence is still emerging
  • Patients already on an appropriate medical plan, where the doctor considers an additional option reasonable

Who may not be suitable

  • Active scalp infection, inflammation or untreated scalp disease in the treatment area
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Scarring alopecia or advanced loss where follicles are no longer viable
  • Active cancer or a history the doctor considers a contraindication
  • Known allergy to any component of the product

Suitability is always confirmed by a doctor after assessment.

The procedure

What the treatment involves

  1. 01

Assessment and trichoscopy, plus a frank discussion of the current evidence.

  2. 02

    The scalp is cleansed.

  3. 03

The doctor delivers the product into the thinning areas, by injection or another selected method.

  4. 04

You go home the same day with aftercare instructions.

Treatment schedule

There is no standardised exosome protocol for hair loss. At Thrive, sessions are usually spaced every 4 weeks, with a minimum course of 3–4 sessions. Each session takes around 15–30 minutes. The exact plan depends on the treatment protocol the doctor recommends for you.

Downtime

Typically minimal; mild redness, tenderness or swelling at treatment sites may last a day or two.

Safety

Risks and precautions

Possible side effects and risks

  • Discomfort, redness, swelling or bruising at treatment sites
  • Allergic or inflammatory reaction
  • Infection or contamination risk if a product is poorly manufactured
  • Unknown long-term effects, given limited human data

Precautions

  • Ask about the source, manufacturer and regulatory status of any exosome product before treatment
  • Disclose all medical conditions, allergies and medications
  • Do not stop proven medical therapy in favour of exosomes

Evidence

What the research shows — and doesn't

Evidence

  • Most supporting evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, with a small number of early human reports.
  • The Labossen manufacturer reports a mean hair-density improvement of 21.3% with its PnP hair growth formula against 4.7% with placebo, and cites the 2% minoxidil arm of a published 2004 trial (14.3% versus 5.6% placebo) for comparison. These are supplier-reported figures, not an independent head-to-head trial.
  • Large, well-controlled human trials in androgenetic alopecia have not yet been published.
  • The Labossen supplier case photographs are labelled as results after three treatments given three weeks apart, photographed at other clinics.

Limitations

  • Products are not standardised, so results and safety cannot be generalised across brands.
  • Regulators have warned about unapproved exosome products; the U.S. FDA has stated that it has not approved any exosome products for these uses.
  • Exosomes should not be presented as a proven or guaranteed treatment.
  • The Labossen density comparison is manufacturer-reported; the minoxidil figures it cites come from a separate 2004 trial of women with female pattern hair loss, not from a study that compared the two treatments.
  • The exosome and growth-factor claims for Labossen Bio-Xome Hair come from the supplier's own materials, which are marketing documents; the underlying peer-reviewed work concerns the exosome and stabilised growth-factor technology, not hair outcomes in patients.

FAQs

Questions about Exosomes

Are exosomes better than PRP?+

There is not enough high-quality evidence to say so. PRP has considerably more clinical research in pattern hair loss.

Are exosome treatments approved?+

Regulatory status depends on the specific product and country. The status of any product used at Thrive is confirmed with you at consultation.

Will I definitely see results?+

No result can be guaranteed. Evidence is still emerging and individual responses vary.

How much does it cost?+

Pricing is confirmed at your consultation if exosome therapy is recommended.
